Survey on Patterns in Software Development

This is a non-functional copy of the original questionnaire. Do not enter any information. The survey is closed.

INTRODUCTION

Although Patterns have their roots in practice, little is really known about the actual usage of Patterns in practice. This questionnaire is part of a research project conducted on behalf of the University of Technology, Dresden, Germany. As part of a master thesis on practical Pattern usage it aims to draw a big picture of different aspects of Patterns in software development. In addition to Design Patterns, also included are patterns for other application fields, for example Analysis Patterns and Process Patterns.

OBJECTIVES AND AREAS OF INTEREST
  1. Reaching a common understanding of the term Pattern as it is used in software engineering.
  2. Do organisations produce/write and consume/introduce Patterns? How?
  3. Usage of different pattern kinds (e.g. Design Patterns, Organisational Patterns, Architectural Patterns) in general and usage of tools for pattern automation.
  4. Possible inclusion of pattern usage and pattern mining in the process model.
  5. Usage of different pattern organisation schemes (e.g. a pattern catalogue).
  6. Summarise gained experience with pattern usage.
  7. Recognition of Patterns as a potential competitive advantage.

STRUCTURE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire consists of 36 questions and the time needed to complete it is approximately 20 minutes. The survey is divided into eight general areas, each containing two to seven questions. Step by step you will be guided through all eight areas. All provided information will be handled anonymously and only be published in aggregated form.
